- Mailbag: Which undrafted free agents will make the roster?by Matt Holder on June 7, 2025 at 5:06 pm
Mello Dotson, Jack Bech | Photo by Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Returning Raider Nation’s questions for the week The Las Vegas Raiders are wrapping up OTAs this week, and mandatory minicamp starts next week. Then, it’s summer break as the Raiders will put a bow on spring practices and get prepped for training camp. Before that, we’ve got this week’s mailbag to get to, focusing on the young guys on Las Vegas’ roster. Q: Who are the 2 to 3 UDFA’s that will make this team, and will any of them start or get meaningful snaps this season? A: With 11 draft picks, I think it’s going to be hard for this year’s undrafted free agents to make the 53-man roster. There will certainly be at least one, maybe two, who earn a spot on the team, but three might be a little ambitious. That said, there are four undrafted guys that I’ll be keeping an eye on this summer: interior offensive lineman Jarrod Hufford, edge defender Jah Joyner, cornerback Mello Dotson and linebacker Jailin Walker. Of those guys, I’ll give Dotson and Walker the best chances to make the roster, given how wide open the corner and linebacker positions are for the Raiders. Joyner would be next in line as he can be a good pass-rusher off the bench. I could see Dotson and Walker getting meaningful snaps with the defense’s need at corner and linebacker. Q: As of today, how many yards does Jack Bech, Dont’e Thornton and Tre Tucker get? A: Typically, I’m not big on stat predictions, but I’ll give this one a shot. I’m bullish on Tucker this season, so I’ll say he sets a career-high with 700 yards. Bech will be around 600 yards, which would have been the seventh-most among rookie wide receivers last year. Thornton, 200, since I think he’s more of a project and will have a bigger impact in year two and beyond. Q: Who’s in the lead for the two guard spots? Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images Raiders offensive line A: Right now, Alex Cappa and Dylan Parham are getting the first team reps at guard. Based on the reports during OTAs, it seems like Cappa has the best chance to start, and Parham will be battling with Meredith for the other spot. Rookie Caleb Rogers is also in the mix at right guard with Cappa, but Rogers is the biggest longshot of the bunch. For those who care, that’s not the lineup I’d go with. I’d prefer Meredith and Parham as the starters, but I understand where the coaching staff is coming from with Cappa at this stage. He’s a veteran and has a high football IQ, which is his biggest strength right now. Last year, he was the one making a lot of the protection calls for the Cincinnati Bengals. Given how young the Raiders are on the interior o-line, especially with a second-year center in Jackson Powers-Johnson, the coaching staff wants Cappa out there to make sure the young guys know what they’re doing. Who knows how long that will last, but I get the logic of having a veteran presence in the trenches. Q: Do you think John Spytek will give Carroll and the coaches a free hand in deciding whether to start Devin White and Alex Cappa over Amari Gainer or Jordan Meredith? And what chance do you give White and Cappa to bounce back to respectability? A: Typically, the coaching staff sets the starting lineup. The general manager might step in if a starter isn’t playing well and there’s a young guy behind the starter, but ideally, the coaches make those decisions. Spytek doesn’t strike me as someone who would try to step on Carroll’s toes and would defer to Carroll when it comes to those decisions, especially considering the vastly different years of experience those two have. If the Raiders had a young head coach, then things might be different. So, starting White and Cappa over Gainer and Meredith, or vice versa, will ultimately be the head coach’s call. Personally, I think Cappa could bounce back to be a servicable starter, though I’m not holding my breath on that, but I’m less confident in White. Marcus and I recently broke down both players on Tape Don’t Lie, and Cappa could at least get a good initial push on blocks last season; he just struggled to sustain blocks and would often lose later in the rep to give up tackles and sacks. Meanwhile, White is more of a role player as a third-down linebacker who can get pressure as an off-ball blitzer and be decent in zone coverage. However, I don’t trust him outside of those two areas. Q: With Pete Carroll as the head coach, will the Raiders run more man or zone secondary? A: Carroll’s scheme is kind of a hybrid between zone and man coverage. He uses a lot of zone or pattern match concepts, which at a high level, is essentially man coverage with more rules. For example, an outside corner will be responsible for the wide receiver he’s lined up across from if the receiver’s route is more than 10 yards, rather than being responsible for the wideout regardless of the route (man coverage) or a specific area of the field (zone coverage). That type of coverage has become pretty common in the NFL over the last few years because it has more answers to offenses’ route concepts than traditional man or zone coverage. The rules help avoid things like pick routes, and the man coverage aspects minimize the soft spots that a traditional zone coverage has. Vic Fangio made the zone and pattern match coverages popular, and Fangio has a lot of disciples around the league that have spread the system. Carroll dipped into that coaching tree toward the end of his tenure with the Seahawks, hiring Clint Hurtt and Sean Desai, who worked for Fangio in Chicago. TraiderN Has it been stated by anyone what running scheme we’ll focus on this year? With Jeanty it seems like power should be the preference, but is the projected starting o-line good at power? A: No one has, and no one will, explicitly state what running scheme Chip Kelly is going to lean for strategic purposes. Kelly was known for using a lot of zone runs when he was gaining popularity at Oregon and with the Eagles. However, he’s incorporated a lot more gap concepts into his offense recently. One of the biggest lessons Kelly learned in Philadelphia, especially with DeMarco Murray, was that he can’t force players to fit into his scheme and needs to make adjustments based on his players’ skill sets. So, I think the Raiders’ offense and running game will be flexible this year and a mix of both concepts. Q: How’s Darien Porter looking? Will he start? A: For the record, I’m not at OTAs, so I don’t have any info on how the practices have been going outside of what’s reported by others. But, to answer the second question, Porter might begin the season as a backup because his technique still needs some work. However, I expect him to get a few starts at some point in 2025, which might not happen until the second half of the year, though. Q: With the Raiders' lack of talent at receiver and defensive back, are the Raiders looking to make any trades before the season? A: Trade, probably not, especially at wide receiver. I think it’s much more likely that the front office signs someone rather than make a trade and give up future draft picks. While the messaging has been that the new regime wants to win now, and I think that’s genuine, I don’t get the sense that they’re willing to mortgage the future for this season. The trade for Geno Smith was one thing because it stabilizes the most important position on the field, and all it cost was one of two third-round picks (at the time). Plus, there are decent wide receiver options still available in free agency, like Amari Cooper and Keenan Allen. And—time for our weekly tradition—can I interest anyone in Mike Hilton at nickel? MtShastaRaiders Now that it’s June will the Raiders splash on a CB1 FA ? And who? A: MIKE HILTON!!!!!! Mailbag diehards will understand where I’m coming from, lol! SacRaider I’ll give you a few available FAs at remaining positions of need, and you tell me who you would sign and on what what deal: Backup RB: Chubb, Dobbins, Ameer CB: Bradberry, Gilmore, Hilton, Rasul LB: Mosley, Kyzir, Preston Smith, Zdarius Smith WR: Keenan, Coop, Agholor, Gabe Davis, Chark, Crowder. G: Risner, Shereff, Shaq, Feliciano A: Running back: Nick Chubb (after passing a physical), and I wouldn’t mind bringing Ameer Abdullah back. Cornerback: I think everyone knows my stance by now... Linebacker: C.J. Mosley is interesting, but I get the feeling his injuries and age—turns 33 in a couple of weeks—are the reason he’s unsigned, which is a major red flag. Kyzir White would be worth kicking the tires on. Wide receiver: Cooper and Allen. Guard: Dalton Risner is interesting because he’s been a good player on the field, but there’s got to be some sort of locker room issue with him. Despite playing well, Risner hasn’t been able to get a long-term contract from two teams now. That makes me cautious of bringing him in. How much? Cheap, one-year deals. Low risk. Paulraider28 Matt do you think this team can win 10 games if Wilkins is healthy? A: I had the Raiders winning nine games in my way-too-early record prediction, so 10 wins is certainly attainable. In my opinion, that feels like the ceiling, though. I think the team will be a lot better than last season—they can’t get much worse—but it might take a while for all the new players to gel with each other. Plus, Las Vegas is likely going to be relying on a lot of young players at key spots this season, which could lead to a slow start. And, on paper at least, five out of the last six games on the schedule are brutal: at Chargers, vs Broncos, at Eagles, at Texans and vs Chiefs. That’ll do it for this week’s mailbag. - Silver Minings: Ashton Jeanty is being used all over the field at OTAsby Marcus Johnson on June 7, 2025 at 2:00 pm
Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images Las Vegas Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty is being used in the backfield and as a receiver early on during OTAs The Las Vegas Raiders had a plan to rebuild with the draft. John Spytek decided not to be a big spender during free agency, opting instead to help the team become younger, which would lead to potential in the future. A player who was drafted by the Silver and Black, who is expected to make an impact, is Ashton Jeanty. Jeanty is coming off a huge season at Boise State, leading the nation in rushing and overall touchdowns. He will be integral to the offense performing at a high level. During Jeanty’s 2024 film, fans weren’t able to see his ability as a receiver. He has great hands, and during OTAs, reports have emerged of him creating big plays on the offensive side of the ball. Levi Edwards of Raiders.com spoke on the usage of Ashton Jeanty in 2025. It seems Kelly is placing Jeanty all over the field, giving him more opportunities to get the ball in open space in last week’s practices,” Edwards wrote. “This included screen passes and getting the ball to the running back out in the flat.” If Chip Kelly finds a way to turn Jeanty into the three-down running back, this offense could be highly explosive. With Brock Bowers and Jakobi Meyers outside, the running game will force single-high defenses that could allow the passing game to flourish. Hopefully, this all translates to the actual games in September. - 8 Raiders entering make-or-break season: Clock ticking on Wilsonby Matt Holder on June 6, 2025 at 8:04 pm
Tyree Wilson | Photo by Brandon Sloter/Getty Images Put up or shut up time for a few guys this fall Heading into the 2025 campaign, the clock is ticking for some players and coaches on the Las Vegas Raiders’ roster. Whether it’s living up to their draft stock or clinging onto their NFL careers, a handful of Raiders are facing a make-or-break season. Here, we’ll dive into a few guys who meet the criteria, outlining how they’ve gotten to this point, their situation on the depth chart, and what they need to prove this fall. Tyree Wilson Acquired via: 2023 No. 7 overall pick It’s safe to say Wilson hasn’t lived up to being a top 10 draft pick so far. While he’s played in 33 out of 34 career games, he’s only made four career starts and has had nearly the impact Las Vegas hoped he’d have. The Texas Tech product has become a rotational player rather than a bona fide starter, and it’s hard to see that changing in 2025. With Maxx Crosby and Malcolm Koonce serving as the starting defensive ends, Wilson’s best chance to prove himself this season is by becoming the first defensive lineman off the bench. He has some position versatility to occasionally line up at defensive tackle and had a few solid performances last year, helping his cause moving forward. But the former top draft pick has to be more consistent or his time in Las Vegas could be coming to an end soon. Devin White Acquired via: 2025 Free agency White is new to the Raiders but has been around the league for a while, entering his seventh season. He’s coming off a campaign where he played for two teams, getting released by the Philadelphia Eagles in early October before signing with the Houston Texans and participating in just seven games with one start for the Texans. However, the veteran linebacker has a chance to start this fall with how thin the position group is for the Silver and Black. He’s only on a one-year deal, so proving himself as a starter could earn him a contract extension and stabilize his career. On the other end of the spectrum, White could find himself out of the league if he struggles to see the field again. Patrick Graham Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images Patrick Graham Acquired via: Hired to Josh McDaniels’ coaching staff in 2022 To be fair, Graham hasn’t had much to work with talent-wise since he signed on with the Raiders and has done a decent job of getting the most out of his players. The 2023 campaign is a good example, as Las Vegas’ defense ranked ninth in points allowed despite the organization not spending much money on that side of the ball. However, the coordinator’s units have ranked 26th and 25th in points allowed during his other two seasons in Las Vegas. Also, he’s been a DC for the last six years, leading the Miami Dolphins’ and New York Giants’ defenses as well, and has only finished with two top 10 defenses while ranking 23rd or lower four times. Graham has already survived two regime changes with the Raiders, but he might be on a short leash with Pete Carroll this season. Dylan Parham Acquired via: 2022 3rd round pick Last year also felt like a make-or-break year for Parham, and he played well enough to buy himself some time and at least be in the mix for a starting spot this fall. However, with the Raiders signing Alex Cappa (also included on this list) and re-signing Jordan Meredith, the Memphis product will have to fight to retain his position on the depth chart. Parham is entering a contract year and is two general managers removed from the one who drafted him, meaning the fourth-year pro could be on his way out of Las Vegas if he doesn’t solidify himself as a starter in 2025. Alex Cappa Acquired via: 2025 Free agency Speaking of Cappa, while he signed a two-year deal this offseason, the contract has an out after this season. According to Over the Cap, the Raiders would only take on $1 million of dead cap space and would save over $5 million by cutting him next spring. On top of that, the veteran offensive lineman is coming off the worst year of his career, where he allowed the most pressures (51) and sacks (eight) among guards, according to Pro Football Focus. So, the 30-year-old who turns 31 in January not only needs to secure a starting job this season, but he also needs to prove he’s still a reliable starter moving forward. Tre Tucker Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images Tre Tucker Acquired via: 2023 3rd round pick There’s plenty of reason to be optimistic about Tucker’s outlook this season, primarily because he finally gets to play with a quarterback who complements his skill set as a deep threat. Also, he showed improvement in 2024. However, the wideout is entering year three and needs to prove that he’s capable of being a second or third option in the passing game. Las Vegas spent a fourth-round pick on Dont’e Thornton during last April’s draft, and Thornton can also take the top off a defense, heating up Tucker’s seat heading into the fall. Michael Mayer Acquired via: 2023 2nd round pick Similar to Tucker, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about Mayer’s outlook this season. He battled personal issues a year ago that forced him to step away from the team from Weeks 4 to 10, and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has a solid history of getting two tight ends involved in the offense. So, there’s a chance the Notre Dame product takes a big step this fall and proves to be a strong second tight end behind Brock Bowers. However, heading into the campaign, Mayer has just 48 catches for 460 yards and two touchdowns in his career and hasn’t made a significant impact as a run blocker, giving himself something to prove in the fall. Eric Stokes Acquired via: 2025 free agency Stokes is entering his first season with the Silver and Black and what could be his last chance to prove he’s a viable starting corner in the NFL. The Green Bay Packers’ 2021 first-round pick has 32 career starts, but has struggled over the last three years and was benched by the Packers last season. In Las Vegas, the former Georgia Bulldog has one more chance to stay on top of the depth chart, but this may be his last opportunity to prove himself a first-stringer. Stokes will have to earn the role in training camp this summer, fending off young corners Jakorian Bennett, Darien Porter and Decamerion Richardson.
